It doesn't matter if you want to be a ghost or a princess-there are hundreds of types of costumes for you to consider. In order to choose the perfect costume for your needs, make sure that you're looking in the right category. Choosing a "type" can help you narrow it down until you can pick the best one!
Scary Costumes: These costumes are most common around Halloween and usually are either traditional or based on a book/movie. Examples of traditional costumes include bats, witches, and werewolves. Rather go with a more modern costume? Try being one of the creatures from the movie Predator or the evil Lord Valdimore from the Harry Potter series. Scarey costumes usually assume that the creature is evil, so these may not be appropriate for everyone, depending on religious beliefs. Humorous Costumes: Clowns are the most traditional example of a humorous costume, but there have begun to be an influx of other funny, ironic, or wordplay costume ideas showing up at parties and events. For example, a couple's costume that is a large hit has the female dress as a large ball and the man wrap himself in chains…get it? Other funny costumes include anything that has someone dress up to be something they are really not. An example? A large man with a beard would make the perfect school girl. Animal costumes also usually fall into this category. Career Costumes: These costumes give you the chance to pretend to do a job that you don't do. You can buy these costumes, or you can borrow a uniform from someone you know who actually works in the profession. A few great ideas are farmers, construction workers, police officers, nurses, pirates, and soldiers. Famous People Costumes: Have you ever wondered what it is like to be Uncle Sam or Barbie? Here's your chance! You can emulate characters from books and movies, or you can even be real people. Every party needs George Washington to attend, right? Mardi Gras Costumes: Not every costume is for Halloween! Mardi Gras is a fun time of year when flashy costumes, elaborate masks, and feathers are all the rage. Mardi Gras costumes are usually not scary and are typically fanciful creatures, such as dragons or fairies. Theatrical Costumes: Of course, any production company will tell you that to visualize a good story you need not only talents actors, but great costumes as well. Stage costumes can include a range of looks, as can movie costumes. Sometimes the costume budget is as much as the set design budget! Children's play clothing falls into this category as well-on a small scale, they are acting. Adult-only Costumes: Lastly, there are adult-only costumes available if you're feeling a bit risqué. The more mild forms of these costumes can be worn to parties where adults will be the only people present, while the more naughty of these costumes are for private showing only! Adult costumes can fall into any of the above categories, but whatever you decide, be sure to have fun! Article Written by: Peggy Schmitt |
