Five Tips for Hosting the Perfect Costume Party
Parties can be fun to attend, but they are even more fun to host. Although hosting requires hours of work, you also get to dictate the specifics of the party-and that includes asking your guests to dress up! Costume parties are fun around Halloween and Mardi Gras, but you can also host costume parties at any time during the year. Here are five fabulous tips for hosting the perfect costume party:

  • Have a clear theme. Unless your costume party is just for Halloween, be specific about the theme of the party and the types of costumes you expect. For example, if it's a Greek party, write on the invitations "Togas required!" or if isn't a Mardi Gras party, specify if all costumes are appropriate or if there will be children attending.
  • Purchase extra masks. Nothing is more awkward than one un-costumed person at a costume party. Maybe he or she didn't realize costumes were required. Maybe it was a last-minute decision to attend. In any case, purchase an inexpensive pack of masks that can be used by these people if they want.
  • Make sure that everyone is being safe. At costume parties, people tend to overheat quickly, due to the close quarters, drinking too much, and heavy clothing and masks. Make sure that everyone has plenty of non-alcoholic drinks. Because many costumes are flammable, it's also a good idea to ask guests to smoke outside. Of course, typical party safety tips also apply-no drinking and driving!
  • Take your theme to al parts of the party. If you're having a Halloween party, play spooky music. If you're having a masquerade ball, serve fancy finger foods. The theme of the party should just reflect in the costumes. Take it to the decorations, invitations, music, drinks, and food choices as well. You can get really creative if you want-there are some great themed party ideas on the Internet. You can also ask guests to bring food or music of their choice that fits into your party theme.
  • Don't forget your own costume! Many hosts and hostesses are so caught up in planning the party that when the big day comes, they have to literally throw together a costume. Don't let this happen to your. At least a week before the party, start planning your costume. Try it on a few times to make sure that it is comfortable to wear during your party.
